What to Look for When Hiring an Electrical Contractor

Hiring an electrical contractor is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your home or business. Whether you’re planning a panel upgrade, installing a generator, adding an EV charger, or troubleshooting an electrical issue, choosing the right contractor helps ensure the project is completed safely, on time, and according to code. Taking a few extra minutes to evaluate your options can save you money, reduce stress, and help you avoid costly mistakes.

Not all electrical contractors provide the same level of experience, communication, or workmanship. Before hiring anyone, here are the key factors every property owner should consider.

Hiring an Electrical Contractor Starts with Licensing

Always verify that the contractor holds a valid electrical license required by your state or local jurisdiction. A licensed contractor has demonstrated the knowledge and qualifications necessary to perform electrical work safely and legally.

In Florida, you can verify a contractor’s license through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

Hiring an Electrical Contractor Means Verifying Insurance

Electrical work involves inherent risks. A reputable contractor should carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage when required. Insurance protects both the homeowner and the contractor if an accident or property damage occurs during the project.

Don’t hesitate to request proof of insurance before work begins.

Review Experience with Similar Projects

Every electrical project is different. Ask whether the contractor has experience with projects similar to yours, whether it’s an electrical panel upgrade, whole-home generator installation, commercial electrical work, or EV charger installation.

Experienced contractors can often identify potential challenges before they become expensive problems.

Ask for a Detailed Written Estimate

A professional estimate should clearly outline the scope of work, materials, labor, estimated timeline, payment schedule, and warranty information.

Written estimates help eliminate misunderstandings and allow you to compare contractors based on more than price alone.

Read Reviews and Check References

Online reviews offer valuable insight into a contractor’s professionalism, communication, and quality of work. Look for consistent positive feedback across trusted review platforms.

If you’re investing in a larger project, ask whether the contractor can provide references from recent customers.

Understand Permits and Inspections

Many electrical projects require permits and inspections. A professional electrical contractor should explain what permits are necessary, obtain them when required, and schedule inspections to ensure the work complies with local electrical codes.

A contractor who suggests skipping permits should raise concerns.

Communication Is a Sign of Professionalism

Clear communication is often one of the best indicators of a reliable contractor. You should understand the project timeline, pricing, available options, and who to contact if questions arise.

A contractor who communicates well before the project begins is more likely to continue that level of service throughout the job.

Ask About Workmanship Warranties

Quality electrical contractors stand behind their work. Ask whether they provide a workmanship warranty in addition to manufacturer warranties for equipment or materials installed during the project.

Don’t Make Your Decision Based on Price Alone

The lowest estimate isn’t always the best value. Extremely low prices can sometimes indicate lower-quality materials, lack of insurance, limited experience, or shortcuts that may lead to future electrical problems.

Instead, compare licensing, experience, communication, warranties, reputation, and overall professionalism.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Electrical Contractor

  • Are you licensed and insured?
  • Will permits be required?
  • Who will perform the work?
  • Can you provide references?
  • Do you offer a workmanship warranty?
  • How long will the project take?
  • Will I receive a written estimate?
  • What happens if unexpected issues are discovered?

I’m a contractor in a different trade, so I have high expectations when I hire someone. John and Roger are excellent to work with. I hired Accurate for a complete home rewire. They communicated well, kept me appraised on progress and did a great job. Happily, they were able to coordinate minimal drywall damage, saving me time and money. It was great working with them and I strongly believe I got value on my large project. I plan on using the again.

Accurate Electric came out to replace a faulty outlet, wire in a doorbell, and wire in an outlet for a garbage disposal and they did a fantastic job. They are professional, arrived on time, cleaned up after themselves and are very friendly. They showed up why the outlet went bad and how they were fixing it. They ended up replacing 43 outlets/switches and fixed one of the worst junction boxes I had ever seen. I would highly recommend them and will be using them again if I ever need electric or AC work.
