Licensed electrician inspecting electrical panel during a power outage

Need an electrician during a power outage?

Not every loss of power means there’s a problem with your home’s electrical system. Sometimes the issue is caused by your utility company, while other times it could indicate a dangerous electrical problem that requires immediate attention. Knowing the difference can save you time, money, and help keep your family safe.

Before assuming you need professional electrical repairs, there are a few simple checks you can perform. This guide explains what to look for during a power outage and when it’s time to contact a licensed electrician.

1. Check Whether Your Neighbors Have Power
If your neighbors are also without electricity, the problem is likely a utility outage rather than an issue inside your home.

Many utility companies provide online outage maps or mobile apps where you can confirm if an outage has been reported in your area. If the outage affects multiple homes, there’s usually no need to call an electrician.

2. Check Your Electrical Panel

If your neighbors still have power, inspect your electrical panel. A tripped main breaker or several tripped circuit breakers could indicate that the problem originated inside your home’s electrical system.

If a breaker has tripped once, try resetting it. However, if it immediately trips again, stop resetting it and contact a licensed electrician to inspect the circuit.

Need an Electrician During a Power Outage if You Smell Something Burning?

A burning smell near your electrical panel, outlets, or switches is never normal. It may indicate overheating wires, damaged breakers, or loose electrical connections.

If you notice a burning odor, immediately turn off the main breaker if it is safe to do so and call an electrician. Do not continue using the affected circuit.

4. Look for Flickering Lights Before the Outage

If your lights had been flickering for days or weeks before the power outage occurred, this could be a warning sign of an overloaded electrical panel, failing connections, or deteriorating wiring.

Electrical issues that develop gradually often become more noticeable during storms or periods of high electrical demand.

5. Check for Water Around Electrical Equipment

Florida storms often bring heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds. If your electrical panel, outlets, or wiring have been exposed to water, do not attempt to restore power yourself.

Water and electricity create a dangerous combination that should always be inspected by a qualified electrician before your electrical system is energized again.

Need an Electrician During a Power Outage After a Storm?

Storm damage can affect your home’s electrical service entrance, meter, weatherhead, or overhead service lines. Fallen tree branches and high winds may also damage exterior electrical equipment.

If you notice damaged wires, loose electrical components, or visible damage around your service equipment, stay away from the area and contact both your utility provider and a licensed electrician.

7. Your Generator Doesn’t Restore Power

If your backup generator fails to power your home during an outage, the problem may involve the generator itself, the transfer switch, or your electrical panel.

A licensed electrician can safely diagnose the issue and restore proper operation.

When You Probably Don’t Need an Electrician During a Power Outage

  • Your neighbors also have no power.
  • Your utility company has confirmed an outage.
  • There are no unusual smells, sparks, or damaged electrical equipment.
  • Your breakers remain in their normal position.

When You Should Call an Electrician During a Power Outage

  • Your home is the only one without power.
  • Your main breaker repeatedly trips.
  • You smell burning plastic or smoke.
  • Your electrical panel feels unusually hot.
  • You see sparks or damaged wiring.
  • Your lights were flickering before the outage.
  • Your generator or transfer switch is not operating correctly.
  • Your electrical equipment has been exposed to water.

Protect Your Home Before the Next Power Outage

Many electrical emergencies can be prevented with routine inspections, panel upgrades, whole-home surge protection, and professionally installed backup generators. If your home has an older electrical panel or you’ve experienced recurring electrical issues, scheduling an inspection before hurricane season can help reduce the risk of unexpected outages.

They communicated well, kept me appraised on progress and did a great job. Happily, they were able to coordinate minimal drywall damage, saving me time and money. It was great working with them and I strongly believe I got value on my large project. I plan on using the again.

Accurate Electric came out to replace a faulty outlet, wire in a doorbell, and wire in an outlet for a garbage disposal and they did a fantastic job. They are professional, arrived on time, cleaned up after themselves and are very friendly. They showed up why the outlet went bad and how they were fixing it. They ended up replacing 43 outlets/switches and fixed one of the worst junction boxes I had ever seen. I would highly recommend them and will be using them again if I ever need electric or AC work.
